Here's the predicament I'm in right now. I have a 2009 BMW 328ix with 44,000 miles on it and I just received a letter from BMW in the mail saying that there's a recall on a part. The recalled part is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve heater. Apparently, it catches on fire if it wears out. I've seen the part cost between $40 and $100.
I would love to visit the nearest BMW dealership to have this part replaced, but unfortunately, that dealership is over two hours away. I live in Maine and I'm pretty far north of Portland, where they're located.
Do you think it's possible for me to do the job myself? I would ask for the parts, of course, but I'm pretty handy with a wrench. I've worked on this car before and have found it pleasurable. I'd rather not drive for half the day and then have to sit there for three hours at the dealer while I could be doing something else, such as working on my own car.
Thoughts? Ideas? Has anyone ever heard if this type of thing?
